Harlowton is about twenty miles from US Forest Service access to
mountain ranges for fishing, hiking, and hunting. Yellowstone National
Park is only a few hours away for Glacier National Park is within a day's
drive. The agriculture heritage continues to dominate the area's economy.
Herds of cattle and sheep are spread over the valley, and fields of wheat,
oats, barley and hay add color to the country throughout the growing
season. Harlowton prides itself in being a full-service community with a
small town friendliness.
Government
Harlowton is an incorporated city which is governed by a Mayor and six councilpersons, two elected from each of three wards. All positions are part-time, serving 4-year terms. The city employs librarian, maintenance and road crew, seasonal park, swimming pool, and solid waste workers. Harlowton is the county seat of Wheatland County.
Business District
Harlowton's business district is convenient, whether you care to walk downtown or make a quick run in the car. Main street still boasts the native sandstone of a frontier town. Store owners are much more than businessman-they are neighbors-eager to work a little extra for their customers or to take time to chat with customers over a cup of coffee. Upper Musselshell Museum
Features a general store, Indian artifacts, and Evacuators Lammersi dinosaur display.
Jawbone Players
A volunteer organization of area residents who host local art and talent shows, and perform a major musical biannually.
Harlowton Theatre
A school-to-work project with movies usually every other weekend.
Resident Services
Harlowton School District #16 junior and high school facility is complete with gym/auditorium, cafeteria, library & computer lab. Curriculum includes those classes required for state accreditation was well as elective classes. The grade school is housed in a separate facility about four blocks away and offers hot breakfast, lunch, resource room, tutor programs, music, physical education, and library services as well as Kindergarten and special needs preschool.
Harlowton Library city/county facility has a great selection of books available for checkout. They also subscribe to several periodicals, an audio book rotation programs and have interlibrary loan access. Public access to Internet is also available.
